The Log Blog

Valentine's Day

Hello Friend,
I am always excited to get together with you and chat about logs, dreams, family and projects. In fact, one of the reasons I started this blog was to get to know you. I am so glad we’ve become friends. I also enjoy getting to brag about the company I’m involved in and ultimately the great people I work with. I hope that you feel as if you’ve gotten to know them a little too, through reading the Log Blog. Another goal of this blog is to educate & inspire you about logs, log home maintenance, the things to expect during a build or restoration project and just some plain ol’ fun about log home living. I also hope you’ve enjoyed seeing the quality work that goes into each cabin and home built by MSLC. I’ve been showing you a lot of our cute cabin builds lately, and would like to share one of our Log Home projects built locally in Heron, MT. Isn’t this home beautiful?

This lovely home is what we call The Home Ridge and was constructed in 2010.

On the main floor, we have a kitchen, living and dining area, laundry/mudroom and a bedroom and bath.  And check out those gorgeous covered porches!

The upstairs is complete with a master bedroom and a balcony off of the half loft.  This home also sports a a full basement.

Here we have a sketch to help you visualize what can be done with a home like this one.  There are many options, however,  for altering this floor plan.  As a custom log home company, we build and design our homes to the specific needs and desires of our individual customers.  We do not offer cookie-cutter homes and therefor do not have a catalog full of pre designed house plans to look through.  Part of the advantage of working with a custom builder, is that we will sit down with you and design the home that meets your needs and budget.  I know that it is sometimes harder to visualize when looking at a blank rectangle or “box” and so I will be sharing with you some of our past home floor plans that we’ve done for other customers to give you some ideas or a place to start.  You can also get ideas for design and styles by looking at magazines and Pinterest boards.  This can be so much fun!  MSLC can help you create your one of a kind log dream home!  Call (406) 847-2316

Did you happen to see our Facebook post about Naming the Office Cabin?  We had an amazing amount of suggestions!  Which was your favorite?  If you are not presently following our page, stop on by.  We have a lot of fun there!

Hey, thanks for dropping by! As always, I am so glad when you do. I’d love to hear your thoughts about The Log Blog. How can I improve, what do you like best, what content would you like to see in the future? Wishing you a fantastic rest of your week.
Blessings,

Spring Projects & A Lil’ MSLC Magic

Spring is the time of plans and projects.

Hello Friends,
Hope you are having a fantastic week.  Are you ready to talk logs?  Or maybe “spring” is more prevalent on your mind.  I know by mid January, many of us are ready for the snow to melt and for spring to arrive.  Let’s talk about both!  Spring is the time for planning and projects.  Logs, equal beautiful creations and projects.  Put them together and what do you get?  MSLC spring projects!  What kinds of projects do you have planned for this spring?  If you have not taken the time to peek at some of our past projects, I encourage you to do so.  Our Gallery page has photos of homes & cabins we have completed along with descriptions about each project.  A great way to get inspired about your next project.  We also have lots of boards on our Pinterest page for inspiration on projects both large and small.  Let’s take a look at one of my favorite past projects.  A wonderful historic cabin that was transformed into this beautiful log home whilst keeping its original flavor.  A little MSLC magic!

Montana Specialty Log Construction had a vision which started with our historic cabin and site.

Nelson took our 80 year old cabin and transformed it in a manner which retained the original and melded it with new construction. He also worked within the confines of a difficult site. Our cabin which had served for 80 years has been given new life. Nelson worked with us and provided us with a unique log home. He was also able to transform walls which originally had been tapered inward to stand vertically without sacrificing the original saddle notching.

Nelson Troyer has many years of experience working with logs. This was critical for the successful transformation of our vision. He retained the original flavor, corrected the flaws, added new complementary touches, and made the vision reality.

Current Projects & Products

If you are new to logs, you may not yet know the importance of chink and stain. Chinking and Staining are essential to any log building. Chinking seals off air (and also that nasty fly or bee) that finds its way between logs. Staining preserves and protects logs from weather, moisture, sun bleaching, insects, etc. We use Sashco brand products here at MSLC. There are many different colors of chink and stain to choose from, including a clear stain, which is often used in interior settings, as it leaves the logs as light and natural as possible. Click Here to read more about the products we use.

New flooring going in at the Clark’s Fork Addition. Visit our Facebook page to hear Aaron explain about the process.

A local addition we are working on. We are using Sashco's Log Jam for the chinking and will be staining with a compatible stain color. Stay tuned!

I hope you are looking forward to spring and new projects and yet are able to enjoy mid January as well.  It is the perfect time to leaf through pages of garden and home magazines.  To draw up plans and write down lists.  I would love to hear about your own plans and ideas, or even see some of your lists & sketches.  Let me know what you’re up to!

Enjoy the mid winter down time and let’s get excited about planning!
Until next time,
Blessings!

Specialty Is Our Middle Name

Hello Friends, With the coming of a new year, we get a chance for  fresh starts, new resolutions and unspoiled dreams.  Reminds me of the clean, fresh fallen snow.  I love the feeling of the unspoiled landscape after a new snow.  It’s like hitting the reset button.  Here’s to clean beginnings!  Glad you were able to stop by.  Let’s do a little dreaming together. At Montana Specialty Log Construction, we understand how important quality work, custom craftsmanship and honest communication is for that special project.  This week we are going to debunk some fairly common misconceptions about log home living.  Let’s get started….

Sometimes we come across someone who believes owning a log home is just too much work. That the maintenance is too cumbersome. Let’s take a closer look at these concerns. Do log homes require maintenance? Yes, log homes (as does any home) do require care and maintenance. First and foremost, to prevent potential problems with your home, use a qualified log home builder for the construction. This is so important. Log construction requires special skills and knowledge that differ from your everyday stick built home. Quality building and professional sealants will make a world of difference. Be wary of the guy who says he has a load of cheap logs and hints that he is able to put them together for you. In the long run, this will be no bargain at all.

Meet Miss Selah Troyer

Selah would like you to know that her daddy is the best log cabin builder in the Northwest. Selah enjoys living in her own log home with her three attentive older brothers. She thinks Montana Specialty Log Construction should become your go-to company for all your log cabin needs. Selah knows that MSLC is a special company full of special people ready to help you make your dream home or project become a reality. "Give my daddy a call, he can help.

Secondly, don’t let the word “maintenance” scare you.   Think of maintaining your vehicle or even your teeth.  In order for your vehicle to run correctly, you need to have an oil change done every so often, and in order to keep your smile white and healthy, you visit the dentist.  Right?  This doesn’t discourage us from owning a car or drinking coffee.  Log home ownership is much the same.   The issue is often that homeowners don’t know what to do or look for with logs.  It is not that it is hard, it is that we need to be told how logs work.  To educate ourselves.  There are some very simple steps to take to keep your log home beautiful and comfortable.  Some tips in our post Log Home Care can give you some information on maintenance and prevention.  You can also sign up for MSLC’s Maintenance Program.  Just like bringing your car to the mechanic instead of changing the oil yourself.  It is up to you.  Give us a call with any questions or to join our Log Home Care family.  It is great for giving assurance & peace of mind while protecting your biggest investment.
For new homes as well as older homes with per-existing issues.

It has been a pleasure visiting with you. I hope you have come away with more confidence about owning a log home. We take pride in our specialty work and truly enjoy our special customers. Don’t be afraid to drop us a line with any questions you may have. We are here to help.

Blessings,

Inspiration for 2018

Happy New Year to you!  How are you spending your first few days of 2018?  Why don’t you grab your favorite mug or tea cup and relax for a moment.  I enjoy our chats!  Let’s get inspired for the coming year… TOGETHER.  This week I’d like to talk about log cabin projects, but I’d also like to hear about what topics you’d like to discuss in the up coming Log Blogs.  Please drop me a line and we will go over the subjects that interest you most!

Dream On!

Here are some Log Cabin Projects to get you inspired. The Highlander is an example of a Full Log Guest Cabin. This 12’x16′ cabin was assembled on site. It is off grid and does not have inside plumbing or electricity. Instead it sports romantic candle light and old-fashioned oil lamps. This cabin was built with guests in mind and has two queen size beds inside along with a wood stove for heat and warming up the kettle for coffee and tea!

Here is an example of a D-Log Cabin.  The Vacation Cabin is 12’x20′ and was assembled in the log yard and then transported whole to its site.  You will notice that because it is a D-log, the outside of the cabin is rounded while the inside walls are flat (like the letter D).  This cabin was finished out with an indoor kitchen area and bathroom.  A perfect tiny home!

The Orchard View cabin is another example of our D-Log cabins and is 12’x20′.  It sports two covered porches, one in the front and also a side porch, adding extra room for outdoor entertaining.  This cabin shows an example of putting the front door on what would typically be the side, not the gable end.  It also features extra windows to let in lots of natural light and scenic views.

How is that for inspiration? Our Cabins are built up to 12’x30′ but we can customize anything you can dream up. Anything longer than 30′ would be considered a log Home versus a cabin. Let’s dream something up together!

How much? How would you estimate what a beautiful log cabin like the ones above would cost? Although all of these cabins can be customized, here are some numbers for you to play with.
Our Basic D-log Cabin begins at $90.00 per sq. ft.

  • Example: a 12’x16′ cabin is 192 sq. ft. x $90 =$17,280.
  • The basic roof pitch is a 6/12; ask us about other options.

The pricing for our basic covered porch is $25.00 per sq. ft.

  • Example: a 12’x4′ front porch is 48 sq. ft. x $25 = $1,200.
  • Other options for porches available. Ask us about our Character Design posts & railings!

The pricing for our optional half-loft is
$15.00 per sq. ft.

  • Example: 12’x8′ half loft is 96 sq. ft. x $15 = $1,440.

Because our cabins are custom built, you can design yours to fit your specific needs and tastes! Give Nelson a call to discuss details and finish work.
